I get really surprised when someone tells me they’ve never heard Major Lazer’s “Lean On” featuring MØ. Besides being a viral song, (it once was Spotify’s “most streamed song of all time”), “Lean On” was my first dose of MØ. That was the only dose it took to get me hooked onto her music. Her vocals were the soul and spirit of that song. Whether you listened to the verses, or the vocal chops that Major Lazer built the song’s chorus upon, you were listening to MØ.
Born Karen Marie Aagaard Ørsted Andersen, “MØ”, 31, is a Danish singer/songwriter. She has been described as an “electronic” and “indie pop” artiste. Her music feels like fire that’s gently stoked so that it’s just enough to warm your mind’s insides, to me… Songs like “Blur” and “I want You” from her “Forever Neverland” album, are just wild enough so that it makes you want to get sparky without wanting to break things… “Trying to be Good” will make your eyes water. “Roots” feels totally divine. “Purple like the Summer Rain” is the song you want to wake up to. Her music is chill like that…and its nothing short of that on features as well…
“Lean On” is possibly the biggest Major Lazer song of all time. That song was all MØ. “Cold Water” with Justin Beiber is another classic Major Lazer song that features MØ. Besides Major Lazer, she has also worked with artistes such as Iggy Azalea, Diplo, Cashmere Cat, and Charli XCX, as well as the late Aviici.
MØ’s first album, called, “No Mythologies To Follow”, was released in March 2014. It holds 12 tracks originally (as subsequent deluxe and digital reissues of the album would go on to increase that number to 23). Stand-Out songs on the album include tracks such as “Pilgrim” (my personal favorite), “Don’t Wanna Dance”, “Walk this Way”, and “XXX 88” featuring Diplo. The album peaked at number 2 on the Danish Album Charts, and number 58 on the UK album charts. Its release was met with generally favourable reviews by “The Guardian” and “Drowned in Sound”. It was also rated 7.1/10 by Pitchfork.
In October 2017, MØ released an EP called, “When I was Young”, under Sony. The extended play holds tracks such as “Roots”, “When I was Young”, as well as “Turn My Heart To Stone”. The EP peaked at number 8 on the Danish Album Charts.
MØ released her second studio album in October 2018. The album, “Forever Neverland”, preceded the hugely successful collaboration with Major Lazer and DJ Snake, “Lean On”, which peaked at number 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. That single turned MØ into a world star, but the originality in her music wasn’t lost on “Forever Neverland”. Singles such as “Sun in Our Eyes” featuring Diplo, and “Blur” were testament to the sound staying the same. When the album eventually dropped, it turned out to be everything I had expected. “Trying to Be Good” and “Mercy” were on repeat for nights on end. I played “Blur” again and again, until my roommates began to legit get irritated with it. I like to think “Beautiful Wreck” was made for people who had just fallen in love. The entire album is just one huge body of beautiful music…
MØ is an artiste you should totally check out!
